National Small Business Week

National Small Business Week is a week to recognize and honor top entrepreneurs in the United States. Entrepreneurs are recognized in different categories.   This year National Small Business Week will be held in May 18 through 20. The  theme for this year is “Empowering Entrepreneurs.”

There will be 4 free forums during the week:

1. Growing Your Business While on the Go:  this forum  will have a presentation by  Bill Rancic, an entrepreneur himself.  He is the first-year winner of “The Apprentice”.  He will speak  on how a busy entrepreneur can continue to move ahead and grow their  business..  There will also be a panel discussion after this.  Top executives from AT&T and SCORE will participate in this panel discussion.

2. Social Media and Small Business: Speakers from GrowBiz Media, Intuit, Yelp, and Youtube can use social media to connect to their customers and grow their business.

3. High Growth, High Impact Strategies: regardless of how small the firm, it could still have great potential .  Executives from CareerBuilder, Honest Tea, and Google Apps will explain how existing powerful technologies, some of which are free will help scale your business.

Exporting Tools for Success:  this forum will talk about small businesses can look into internal markets where they may have a unique value proposition.   Growing the export market  is a priority of the President’s National Export Initiative.

This year the event will be held in Washington, DC at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel & Conference Center.  There are discounted rates available for the attendees.  The phone number for reservation is 888-888-1778.  The hotel is less than four miles from the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and 34 miles from Dulles International Airport.

National Small business week is hosted by the Small Business Administration.  SBA has over 2,200 employees with a mission of helping entrepreneurs and small business owners.  They provide access to capital, through loan guarantees.  They also provide counseling and help with federal contracting opportunities. SBA has 14,000 affiliated counselors.   SBA is lead by Karen Mills as Administrator  and Marie Johns as Deputy Administrator. Both women have stellar background in helping small businesses.  Mills has an MBA from Harvard university.  Johns was recognized as the “25 most influential black women in business” by the Network Journal.
